Dear Saints of Living God – Grace and Mercy to you and your family!
Hope you all had an amazing time, celebrating the Pentecostal Sunday and that the Lord will fill us all with the fresh tongues, that speaks the words of life into everyone that we come across – and doesn’t slander…
Praise the Lord for the message that He wants to give it to His church, as we read these 7 letters that we see in Revelation, we need to understand, that they are not only a picture of 7 seven kinds of churches found in the Asia minor, but it fits the bill for any age, in any period of history. Every church in the world today will fall into one more of the traits of these churches. Also, the scholars believe that this is a preview of the entire age of the church – between the first coming of our Lord as a baby in a manger to the second appearing on the air, as the King of kings and the Lord of lords.
The church in Thyatira
These letters to the churches have 4 parts to it. The introduction to who is sending the message, the commendations, the things that the Lord doesn’t like and the reward for correcting the problem or staying strong in their faith.
As we read about the 4th church – it is very alarming, how the Lord pays attention to every detail in our lives. We have seen that these churches are competing to get the attention of the Roman empire; Thyatira, is no exception to it – a small city like Charlotte, and a great commercial center.
I highly encourage you to read the whole passage from Revelation 2:18 – 29, but we will tear this passage a bit to see what the Lord is speaking to us today. Only in this letter, Jesus is referred to as the “Son of God” – in the book of Revelation..
The Lord has great things to say about this church –
“I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first”
When we read about this passage, we see that they have no scarcity to the love for the Lord, which leads to servicing Godly people. In fact, the church must be growing in both number and faith. If we had been there at Thyatira, we would be greatly impressed – with the busyness, active church with wonderful people – who have all the qualities – Love, faith, concern for the poor.
But the man with the blazing eyes and burning feet is not interested in the superficial outward appears of these churches – he wants to cut through into the deeper and behind the scenes activities.
Let us dive into what makes the Lord uncomfortable:
“Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.”
Here is some background:
This town is where, people of many traits were residing – carpenters, dyers, sellers of goods, tent makers and they all had unions, and often times, these unions were run by pagan believers. And it is hard for the Christians to do business without being part of these unions.
Now, when you go to union meetings, they were part of worshipping Greek goddesses, and eat the meat offered to these gods. Here is the problem – in order to make a living, these Christians have to belong to these unions, and the pressure is to make a living.
Apparently, there was a woman in this church, even though her name might be different, Jesus calls her “Jezebel” – because of her character.
What is she doing? 2 Things that the Lord is against: 1. She is leading the people to sexual immorality and 2. Eating the food scarified to the idols.
- Sexual immorality.
The Lord links sexual immorality with Idolatry. One leads to the other – fornication or adultery is clear cut explicit violations to what the Lord preaches in the Word.
The lack of standards on the sexuality or easy acceptance by our church of present day is making the Lord’s stomach sick. Some churches approving the homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle – really? Some of the church leaders, not seriously challenging the members watching pornography – makes us substandard. Look what Jesus is saying – “You tolerate that woman Jezebel”. We face the same lack of leadership in our present day church compared to the 1st century. If we reject God’s word – then He is no longer the Lord of our life.
- Not respecting the boundaries:
She is telling everyone – “Business is Business”. We need to separate the church life from our business life.
How many times, do we fall into this trap ourselves – It is just a wine, if I don’t take it – I might offend my business partner. It is just a bribe, if we don’t give the work will not get done… or often we might even say – “God will understand and overlook this”. In God’s Kingdom, there is only 0’s and 1’s… whether it is right or wrong – there is no in between. God is sick of the double standards…
Dr. Earl Palmer (from Berkley), has said about how subtle these things enter into our lives:
“The most subtle challenge to faith does not usually originate in public amphitheaters but in the daily places where we earn the money we need to live. What the trades need, what professions need, what all deployments of our lives need, is not our soul but our skills; not our worship but our hard work. When we once learn this vital alignment of values, we will do better in our work and have fewer ulcers too. Idolatries, whether of the dramatic, amphitheater type or the low-grade office type, always make us sick.”
These boundaries are there to be respected, it is easy to say, the BIG NO, the first time than to say, a small no the second time.
“You tolerate that woman Jezebel”, God is against, how we have tolerance to the things that makes His stomach sick. I know, many times, it is popular among many evangelical commentators to relate all that is said about this church to the Roman Catholic Church, and point to Spanish inquisition, or for introducing various heathen practices into Christian walk or the control of political power for the religious leader (Pope, as the government leader) etc.,
My humble opinion is, it is not only the Roman Church that suffers from these errors – “We” so-called Protestants have had a quarrel with Rome for centuries, largely over the three M’s — Mary, the Mass, and the Magesterium (the government, the leadership of the church) – seems to be missing the backbone to some of these standards as well.
Let me close with this thought, the more time, we spend with the father in soaking ourselves in prayer and in His presence, the more we will walk like Him and talk like Him and behave like Him.
As Psalms 91:1 says,
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
When we hang around the secret place of the most High, then evilness will flee from us – and the Lord says, He gives power to over the nations and the morning star.
Beware of the Jezebel’s in your life…
May the good Lord bless you bountifully today!
